On Mindfulness

I will approach mindfulness from an informational perspective, adding just a little brain physiology. If you already know about mindfulness, you can directly skip to " The heresy" Introduction As many subjects that I approach in this blog, my knowledge about the subject is at hobby level, maybe a little more than the average guy. One of my childhood dreams was to discover something really new. The strategy that I considered then was to start on that subject without all the prejudice from the previous research done in that domain. I realize now that it is merely impossible to innovate something without having in mind the prior results and mistakes done on that study field. However, I still hope that one can derive new perspectives in a domain by combining common knowledge from various domains. With that said, here is a little essay about how and why mindfulness might  be working for humans. This might depart sometimes from the mainstream conception on mindfulness and ...

Review Philips GoGEAR Azure Bluetooth

Even better read: Data Consistency in Distributed System - CAP, PACELC My Secular Philosophy - Life, God, Knowledge, Morality, Ethics This blog is mainly focused on my Philosophical and theoretical ideas. From time to time I have practical posts that are too few to deserve a blog by themselves. I still hope my other work (like above) is even more valuable than such practical article as below. * * *     Overall I'm happy with my Philips GoGEAR Azure. I can release the storage space occupied by music on my phone - that used to be my portable Bluetooth player. I can also save some battery on my phone and it's a bit more handy to have a dedicated device that really fit in a small pocket. Even if the player don't support AptX (my headphones does support it), the sound is still pretty good for travel and work. If I want true sound quality I can use regular wired phones. Pros: Good wireless sound (Bluetooth/A2DP) Very good wired sound Plays FLAC along with MP3 Good...

Note that Bose QC 45 does not have NFC anymore - used for fast Bluetooth connection.   Updates 2020 :  Bose QC35 II (2) is basically identical as sound, look and feel to the original QC 35. The only adding is a button that can be used to activate Google Assistant or alternatively to change the noise cancelling level. Bose QC35 (1 or 2) remains the best noise cancelling headphones that I ever tried, especially because of the ear comfort and ergonomy, along with long battery life. Another big advantag...

Noise cancellation headphones - "how it works?"

"Noise cancellation " is a feature in recent high-end headphones that aims to actively remove the outside noise while listening music. You can also use them without music, however the efficiency is lower. "Noise cancellation" is a relatively new technology and you must be aware of what is reasonable to expect from such headphones. Noise cancellation - how it works

Music and mathematics

In a temperate musical octave , there are 12 possible sounds. However, in a certain melody, usually, only 7 of them are used. When you see, for example, "Symphony...in Do major", you should expect that it is based on the white piano keys only. When using others scales, like for "Symphony... in Re#", some of the white keys will be replaced by some of the black keys. Let's see the 12 keys in one piano octave:

The meaning of music

The meaning of music is hard to capture in words. Let's try some ideas anyway! The brain bug The brain has a natural ability to extract patterns from all the stimulus. It's a fact that we like the music that has some patterns: that is not very monotonic (boring) but not very random either, so we can continuously learn some new patterns. Somehow the brain has the illusion that it continuously learns in an accelerated rate by listening music. So music could be considered a small addiction at the first analysis.

Audiophile music - 10 conclusions

I am passionate about sound quality lately. Here are my early conclusions from the research and experiments I did. This is the order of sound optimizations that you could try in order to improve the music experience. 1. Live music sounds better than recorded music 2. Un-amplified live music sounds better than amplified music 3. Recorded music sounds better on loud speakers than on headphones 4. Expensive headphones (>100$) sounds better than cheap ones 5. Open-air headphones sounds better than closed enclosure ones 6. Loss-less music (like FLAC) sounds better than MP3 7. High bitrate MP3 (>128kbps) sounds better than low bitrate 8. A professional DAC (or sound card) sounds better than a cheap one 9. High sample rate music (>44KHz) could sound better than 44KHz (or not) 10. Music encoded at 24bits could sound better than 16bits music (or not)  I will say a few words about each, from my limited experience and research:
